PAC 1:  Basic Criteria, Epidemiology, Radiobiology and Risk

Program Area Committee (PAC) 1 oversees work on basic criteria, epidemiology, radiobiology and risk. Within the scope of PAC 1 are five committees: SC 1-8 on Risk to the Thyroid from Ionizing Radiation, SC 1-13 on Impact of Individual Susceptibility and Previous Radiation Exposure on Radiation Risk for Astronauts, SC 1-15 on Radiation Protection and Science Goals for Short-Term Lunar Missions, SC 1-17 on Second Cancers and Cardiopulmonary Effects After Radiotherapy, and SC 85 on Risk of Lung Cancer from Radon.

An authorized but unfunded activity within this program area is:

  • lung cancer risks from inhaled radionuclides

PAC 1 met on February 9, 2006 at NCRP to discuss recommendations on several new report activities and candidate committee members. PAC 1 was requested by the Board of Directors at its September 21-22, 2006 meeting to initiate planning of the 2008 NCRP Annual Meeting on “Low Dose and Low Dose-Rate Radiation Effects and Models.” PAC 1 held a teleconference on December 8, 2006 and met again on April 17, 2007 to discuss the 2008 Annual Meeting Program. A final draft of the agenda for the two-day Annual Meeting was completed during the second quarter of 2007.
