PAC 2:  Operational Radiation Safety

Program Area Committee (PAC) 2 focuses on issues related to operational radiation safety. PAC 2 is actively engaged in preparing scope statements for future projects to be submitted to sponsors for funding. Functioning within the scope of PAC 2 are three report-writing committees: SC 2-2 on Key Decision Points and Information Needed by Decision Makers in the Aftermath of a Nuclear or Radiological Terrorism Incident, SC 2-3 on Radiation Safety Issues for Image-Guided Interventional Medical Procedures, and SC 2-4 on Self-Assessment of Radiation Safety Programs.

Currently authorized but unfunded activities within this program area are:

  • air monitoring
  • operational radiation safety in medical fusion imaging procedures
  • design of facilities and installed equipment for handling unsealed radioactive materials
  • response to and investigation of radiological accidents and incidents
  • radiation protection guidelines for industrial accelerators and irradiators

A proposal to prepare the report on self-assessment was reviewed and approved by the Board of Directors at a meeting on December 14, 2006. PAC 2 began the preparation of this report in 2007. PAC 2 will meet on April 13, 2008 in conjunction with the 2008 Annual Meeting to review the new report.
