SC 1-17:  Second Cancers and Cardiopulmonary Effects After Radiotherapy

This report will provide a focused review of the present state of knowledge on the incidence of second cancers and cardiopulmonary effects after medical exposures to ionizing radiation (e.g., cancer radiotherapy). The scope of the report was approved by the Board of Directors at its September 21-22, 2006 meeting, and members of the Committee were identified during the fourth quarter of 2006. The Committee’s first meeting was held on July 10-11, 2007 at NCRP Headquarters during which they developed a detailed scope and outline. A second meeting was held on August 7-8, 2008 during which preliminary drafts of most sections of the report were discussed, the outline of the report was revised and a new timeline for the completion of the report was developed.  Revisions to several sections of the draft report were received during the first quarter of this year, while four sections are in need of further refinement.

Further revisions and substantial new material were received during the third quarter. The initial version of the draft report is now largely complete and available online for Committee review; the summary, conclusions and recommendations remain to be written.

The Chairman and Vice Chairman met in January 2010 to make final revisions to the draft report. The draft will be submitted for PAC review during the second quarter.
