SC 4-1:  Management of Persons Contaminated with Radionuclides

The Committee is preparing a revision of NCRP Report No. 65 on Management of Persons Accidentally Contaminated with Radionuclides. In planning the report’s scope, it was noted that Report No. 65 was focused primarily on individuals contaminated with one or more radionuclides at a nuclear facility that was prepared to deal with the needed medical care, bioassay measurements, dose calculations, follow-up measurements, etc. However, a much broader range of contamination events has occurred, and more may occur whose features could be described as "small" or "large" numbers of contaminated people, "accidental" or "deliberate" contaminating events, and not necessarily associated with nuclear facilities. Therefore, the Committee is broadening the coverage of radionuclides considered as well as the possible exposure and response scenarios that may be involved. It is intended that this report will be a multipurpose handbook that will provide quick reference information for early post-exposure actions, as well as guides for longer-term management and treatment of exposed persons. The Committee held its final meeting on July 8-9, 2006 in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. Council review of the draft report was completed in April 2008. The Committee revised the draft report in response to the many comments and suggestions received. The report was approved for publication in 2008 and will be issued in two volumes, the first of which is a Handbook for managing contaminated persons. The second volume provides the scientific and technical bases for this management. The Handbook is at the printer. Much of the final editing has been completed on the second volume and it will be sent to the printer early in the first quarter of 2010.
