Dr. Poston is a Professor in the Department of Nuclear Engineering at Texas A&M University and a consultant to their Veterinary Teaching Hospital. From 1988 to 1998, he served as Head, Department of Nuclear Engineering and also as Director of the Nuclear Engineering Division, Texas Engineering Experiment Station. He held previous appointments with the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta and the Health Physics Division of Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Tennessee. John Poston received a BS in mathematics from Lynchburg College in Virginia, a MS and a PhD in nuclear engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta. John Poston was first elected to the Council in 1990. He chaired Scientific Committee (SC) 46‑14 that published Management of Terrorist Events Involving Radioactive Material in October of 2001. Dr. Poston is currently a member of SC 46 on Operational Radiation Safety, SC 46-16 on Radiation Protection in Veterinary Medicine, and SC 46-17 on Radiation Protection in Educational Institutions. He previously served on several committees including SC 51B on Radiation Protection Related to Pediatric Nuclear Medicine, SC 55 on Experimental Verification of Internal Dosimetry Calculations, SC 57 Task Group on Metabolic Models, SC 46-12 on Effective Dose Equivalent, SC 46-10 on Assessment of Occupational Exposures from Internal Emitters, and SC 64-18 on Plutonium. Dr. Poston was elected an distinquished emeritus member of the NCRP in 2002.
