Dr. Held is Associate Radiation Biologist in the Department of Radiation Oncology at Massachusetts General Hospital and Associate Professor of Radiation Oncology at Harvard Medical School. She received her B.A. in chemistry from Thiel College and Ph.D. in biological sciences from the University of Texas at Austin. She held positions at the Gray Laboratory in the United Kingdom and Mayo Clinic and Mayo Foundation prior to joining Massachusetts General/Harvard. Dr. Held's research interests include radiation biology; mechanisms of oxidative stress-induced DNA damage, repair and cell killing; intercellular signaling mechanisms, including bystander effects; and effects of low dose radiation and heavy and energetic ions on biological systems. She is currently vice president elect of the Radiation Research Society, a member of the American Society for Therapeutic Radiology and Oncology where she has recently completed a term as Chair of the Radiation and Cancer Biology Committee, and a member of the Society for Free Radical Biology and Medicine, Association for Radiation Research, and American Association for the Advancement of Science. She has served on the Editorial Boards of Radiation Research and the International Journal of Radiation Biology as well as on the Radiation Study Section of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and various ad hoc NIH, U.S. Department of Defense, and National Aeronautics and Space Administration review panels.
