NCRP Report No. 142, Operational Radiation Safety Program for Astronauts in Low-Earth Orbit: A Basic Framework

The National Council on Radiation Protection and Measurements (NCRP) announces the release of Report No 142, Operational Radiation Safely Program for Astronauts in Low-Earth Orbit: A Basic Framework. This Report is the product of Scientific Committee 46-15 chaired by Richard J. Vetter, Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minnesota.

This Report offers the Council's views on components of an operational radiation safety program for astronauts working in low-earth orbits. The Report is 168 pages consisting of nine sections, four appendices, a glossary, a listing of acronyms used in the Report, and 13 pages of references. The titles of the nine sections are: (1) Summary and recommendations, 22 pages, (2) Objectives of the Operational Radiation Safety Program for Astronauts, 8 pages, (3) Current Management of Astronaut Radiation Safety Program, 5 pages, (4) Radiation Environment in Low-Earth Orbit, 5 pages, (5) Approach to Dose Assessment for Astronauts, 7 pages, (6) Data Collection and Interpretation for Dose Assessment, 16 pages, (7) Role of Biodosimetry in Dose Assessment, 6 pages, (8) Recommended Management of Astronaut Radiation Safety Program, 11 pages, and (9) Radiation Safety Records, 7 pages.
